Byron Bay is one of Australia's most-loved wedding destinations. Couples come for the beaches, the green hinterland, the relaxed coastal style and some of the country's most talented wedding suppliers.

It suits almost any style, from a barefoot beach ceremony to a long-table dinner in the hills. Many couples make it a whole weekend, with welcome drinks on the Friday and a recovery swim on the Sunday.

The flip side of its popularity: the best venues and suppliers book out early, and guest accommodation fills fast in peak season. Plan ahead and Byron is easy.

What is the best time of year to get married in Byron Bay?

September to November is the best time to get married in Byron Bay. Spring brings mild days of 22–25°C and the fewest rainy days of the year. September is the driest month, averaging just 5 rain days. Bureau of Meteorology

Summer (December to February) is hot and humid, and February and March are the wettest months, each averaging over 190 mm of rain. Summer is also school holiday season, so accommodation books out fast. Autumn (March to May) is warm, and May is drier than March. Winter (June to August) brings 19–20°C days and cooler evenings, ideal for an intimate wedding with a fire pit. Bureau of Meteorology

Where can you get married in Byron Bay?

Byron Bay has four main wedding settings, and many couples mix two: a beach ceremony, then a reception in the hinterland.

  • Beaches and headlands. Wategos, Little Wategos, The Pass, Tallows and the Cape Byron Lighthouse area give you ocean views and golden-hour light. These spots are public and need a booking (see permits below).
  • The hinterland. The green hills around Bangalow, Newrybar, Federal and Mullumbimby are home to private estates, farms and macadamia plantations. Great for long-table dinners and marquees.
  • Rainforest and gardens. Lush, shady settings that stay cooler in summer and feel wonderfully private.
  • Restaurants and boutique hotels. Ideal for smaller weddings, with food, drinks and service in one place.

For a reception with catering, drinks and dancing, you'll need a private venue. Council reserves are alcohol free with a 2-hour limit, and National Parks spots don't allow commercial catering. Byron Shire CouncilNSW National Parks

Do you need a permit to get married on the beach in Byron Bay?

Yes. Every wedding ceremony on a Byron Bay beach or park needs approval, and who you ask depends on the spot. Byron Shire Council

  • Council land: ceremonies are up to 2 hours with a maximum of 150 guests. Council reserves are alcohol free, and balloons and plastic or paper confetti aren't allowed. There's an application fee plus a licence fee based on guest numbers. Byron Shire Council
  • National Parks spots, like Wategos: a champagne toast is allowed if it's in your application (up to 1 bottle per 4 guests). You can have up to 24 chairs, a small table and a small arch (up to 1.8 m high). Music must be one small speaker or unamplified musicians. Throwing confetti, petals, rice or streamers isn't allowed, and neither are marquees, candles or balloons. NSW National Parks
  • It's never exclusive. Bookings don't give you exclusive use. Beaches and parks stay open, so expect swimmers and walkers in the background. Byron Shire Council
  • Plan parking. Wategos has paid council parking along Marine Parade. A guest shuttle makes the day much easier. NSW National Parks

Rules and fees can change, so always check the latest with the land manager before you lock in your date.

How far ahead should you book a Byron Bay wedding?

Our planners recommend booking your venue and date 12 to 18 months ahead for a spring or summer Byron Bay wedding, as Saturdays in peak season go first.

  1. 12–18 months out: venue and date, then your photographer and celebrant, who book out early in Byron.
  2. 9–12 months out: guest accommodation. Hold a block of rooms or a few holiday houses, as Byron fills fast in peak season.
  3. 6–9 months out: florist, hair and makeup, music, and guest transport.
  4. 3–6 months out: your beach or park booking. Byron Shire Council asks for at least 4 weeks to process an application, so don't leave it late. Byron Shire Council
  5. 1–3 months out: final numbers, timeline and wet weather plan.
